What does “all natural” really mean?
“All natural” is less about what’s in your drink and more about what is not in it. For example, ask yourself this: How can some sports drinks be left sitting in the sun for a week and still taste exactly the same? Now that’s scary. Everything that goes into XOOD comes directly from nature. There are no artificial preservatives, sweeteners, colorings, flavorings or chemicals of any kind. XOOD doesn’t even depend on traditional additives to make it dissolve. Being “all natural” means you need to treat it differently from your average sports drink. With no preservatives, XOOD is not meant to be mixed up and left sitting in your car for a week. You may notice that if XOOD sits for a while, a little sediment may collect at the bottom of your water bottle. It’s not easy keeping all this goodness dissolved in liquid without the use of harsh chemicals—in fact, it took us over a year to perfect the process! If you see some sediment at the bottom of your bottle, just give a quick shake it will disappear in a flash.

I am lactose intolerant. Will XOOD upset my stomach?
We have many XOOD users who are lactose intolerant and have not had an issue.

Lactose intolerance is caused by a deficient enzyme in the gut (lactase). It is estimated that 75% of adults worldwide show some decrease in lactase activity during adulthood. The symptoms of lactose intolerance are: abdominal pain, bloating, gas, nausea, and diarrhea and usually occur from 30 minute up until 1-2 hours after eating a product containing lactose. The amount of lactose that found in Whey Protein Concentrate in XOOD is a fraction of a gram. For comparison, a glass of milk has 9-12 grams of lactose. Since lactose intolerance is dose dependent, there is usually not enough lactose in XOOD to elicit any sort of response. But, lactose intolerance is sometimes confused with milk allergy. This is an abnormal immune response to milk proteins and is not dose dependant. So, even the smallest traces of milk protein can cause symptoms.

Is XOOD gluten free?
While XOOD does not contain wheat gluten, the fructose used in all three XOOD formulas does contain corn gluten at low levels. In addition, the natural pomegranate flavor found in XOOD Pomegranate also contains corn gluten.

Celiac disease is an auto-immune disease caused by a reaction to a particular sub-type of gluten protein, called gliadin. Gliadin gluten comes from wheat, rye, barley, and certain other grains. Cereal grains such as corn, quinoa, millet, sorghum, amaranth, buckwheat, rice, and wild rice which do not contain gliadin appear safe for Celiac patients to consume1. XOOD contains corn gluten and not gliadin thus should be safe for people with Celiac disease and other gluten allergies to consume.

Does XOOD contain High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)?
No XOOD does not contain HFCS.

HFCS is a group of corn syrups that has undergone enzymatic processing to convert its glucose into fructose and has then been mixed with pure corn syrup to produce a desired sweetness. HFCS is typically used as a sugar substitute and in found in an innumerable number of processed foods and beverages, including some sports drinks. For the manufacturer is cheaper and easier to use. Critics of HFCS point out a correlation between increased usage of HFCS in foods and obesity rates in the United States over three decades. Some allege that HFCS is more detrimental to health than table sugar; others claim that the low cost of HFCS encourages overconsumption of sugars. HFCS should not be confused with naturally occurring fructose which is a powder and is what is found in XOOD. Fructose in its natural form is that same sugar that is found in fruit.

How do I pronounce XOOD?
XOOD is pronounced like exude.

Are the products good for all stages of training?
You don't need a different drink for each phase of exercise. The idea of a different drink for before, during and after exercise has been around a long time. It is largely based on the idea that the body has different demands at different times in the exercise cycle. It's pretty easy to distinguish between pre-exercise and exercise. However, the notion that recovery starts after exercise ends is misleading. Actually, recovery begins the second exercise starts and can continue for hours or even days after exercise finishes. XOOD provides you with the necessary ingredients to perform through all phases of exercise.

Can a healthy drink really give you peak performance?
Absolutely. Peak performance is all about desire. The desire to push your body to the extreme. But, don't expect great things from your body unless you treat it well. That means train hard, sleep well and nourish your body with wholesome foods. When it comes to choosing a sport drink, the more natural the better it is for you and the better you will perform. Just ask any of our athletes.

Does protein belong in a sports drink?
In the past few years, studies have clearly demonstrated that a protein/carbohydrate drink enhances performance when compared to a carbohydrate drink alone. The reasons for this are elusive. It is likely that, as glycogen levels become depleted during prolonged exercise, the body undergoes a process called gluconeogensis. Gluconeogensis is an energy-intensive process that can lead to accelerated muscle breakdown in order to liberate amino acids to drive the gluconeogenic process. Ingestion of small amounts of protein may help fuel the gluconeogenic process with enough protein to allow the body to avoid having to break down muscle. Also protein/carbohydrate drinks appears to help stem cortisol release better than a carbohydrate-only drink. Cortisol is a hormone (often referred to as "the stress hormone") which is released in large quantities during intense exercise, which is very stressful for the body. But protein is much harder to digest than carbohydrates. Just try eating a steak and than going for a run. So if you have too much protein during an endurance event, you risk some serious GI distress and cramping. Too little, and you may not get any benefit.

Why did you include 2 types of carbs (maltodextrin & fructose)?
Your gut has a limited number of receptors to transport carbohydrates into your bloodstream to be used for fuel. So by using a drink that contains only one source of carbs you will overwhelm those receptors, transport will slow down, and those extra carbs sitting in your gut will cause water to leave your bloodstream to enter your gut. This can lead to abdominal pain, dehydration and decreased performance during exercise. Studies have shown that by using two different sources of carbohydrates (maltodextrin and fructose, in this case) that are absorbed by different receptors you get increased absorption, and thus supply more energy, faster, to metabolizing tissues.

Why does it "smoke" so much when I open the canister?
Most powdered drinks employ a host of artificial chemicals and suspension agents to keep your drink nicely dissolved in water. We do it the old fashioned way. We grind XOOD into a fine powder, which allows for better mixing. The downside is the puff of smoke when you open the container. The upside: no unnecessary and possibly harmful chemicals in your body.

Why doesn't it have much flavor?
The most common complaint we’ve heard from athletes about other performance drinks is the horrible taste. Most are too sweet, too overwhelming, and linger too long. So we deliberately made XOOD with a very light taste. The added benefit is that you avoid extra additives like flavorings and artificial sweeteners.

We recommend you mix one scoop (or single serving packet) of XOOD with 16 to 24 ounces of water or your beverage of choice. But each and everyone of us is unique, and has different tastes. Some of our athletes enjoy a stronger taste and like to use two scoops (or single serving packets) with 24 ounces. Feel free to experiment and let us know how you like to XOOD. Email Us >>
